The knee is one of the most common sources of musculoskeletal pain. Quite often accurate diagnosis and proper non-operative treatment can improve or resolve the problem. If surgery is required, there have fortunately been dramatic improvements in the arthroscopic treatment (the most minimally invasive surgery) of most knee disorders. The most common knee issues seen include ACL tears, meniscal tears, patellar instability, cartilage injuries, and early arthritis. Most of these issues, if they do not respond to conservative treatment, can be treated with arthroscopic surgery with possible biologic augmentation.
Dr. Mantell specializes in a full continuum of knee care, from arthroscopic meniscus repair to partial and full knee replacements. He has been trained in newer techniques such as ACL repair, ALL reconstruction augmentation for failed ACL reconstruction, multiple cartilage transplant techniques (osteochondral autograft/allograft, autologous chondrocyte implantation), and internal bracing. Re-alignment knee osteotomy may be offered for younger patients with articular cartilage degeneration and poor alignment in order to avoid knee replacement for a period of time.
